According to Emily Brontë's eponymous novel, Wuthering Heights is a sixteenth-century farmhouse set in the Yorkshire Moors, and the grandest building in the neighbourhood other than Thrushcross Grange. There are some stunted trees at the end of the house, and a range of thorns, permanently bent by the wind. In this illustration, Seth Insua has combined the architecture of Ponden and High Sunderland Halls, both said to have inspired the author, with the rolling landscape of Top Withens. Wuthering Heights is all about forces running wild - feeling and weather and rage!
"The intense horror of my nightmare came over me: I tried to draw back my arm, but the hand clung to it, and a most melancholy voice sobbed, ‘Let me in—let me in!’… As it spoke, I discerned, obscurely, a child’s face looking through the window. Terror made me cruel; and, finding it useless to attempt shaking the creature off, I pulled its wrist on to the broken pane, and rubbed it to and fro till the blood ran down and soaked the bedclothes: still it wailed, ‘Let me in!’"
- Emily Brontë, Wuthering Heights
