This drawing locates the Dalloway residence in Dean's Yard, where Virginia Woolf described Mr Dalloway approaching his front door. The grand townhouse, settled in the heart of historic, traditional Westminster, is resolutely symbolic, especially given the novel's preoccupation with facades. Mrs Dalloway is a woman of her era: prim, proper, and perfectly controlled, just like the elegant exterior of her home. Yet, behind closed doors - as in the novel's stream-of-consciousness interior monologue - she is a swirl of passion, anxiety, and socially transgressive impulses. Here, Insua depicts Mrs Dalloway in an upstairs window of a house visualised according to the architectural style of the time, gazing out across 1920s London.
